PUBLIC CONCERTS
Most composers were employed by wealthy people or gthe church, to write music for religious services and for entertainment at court. Public concerts, where the audience payed to see a performance, began in the late 1600s. This meant that composers could now write music to suit the tastes of a much wider audience, rather than just the church or nobility. Haendel made a living mostly from staging his operas and religious works called oratorios.
